The Streak

Matt Neatock scores over 1,000 in 24 straight games – Week Nine, 2004

Midway through 2004, there really wasn’t much to say about Matt Neatock. A solid (and active) league member in only his second year, yet he hadn’t really done much to impress anyone in fantasy football. He did manage a respectable 7-7 mark in his first year, losing in the playoffs inround one to the eventual champ, Burrier. Certainly no shame in that. Year two though was a lot tougher.

First there was

‘The Trade’, followed by the loses that were starting to pile up. By week nine, Matt sat at 2-6, last in the league. However, something was a mist. Something strange was going on; Matt was scoring. No, not a lot, but over 1,000 a game. In fact, the last time he failed to break 1,000 was week four in 2003 in a loss to Don. How below the radar was this? Looking back at the Tuesday’s Thoughts, I only talked about that record in regard to myself, at least up until week five when my streak ended at 15.

I mentioned the milestone only once by week nine in regard to Matt, even though he was one 1,000-pt game away from breaking the record. Facing the league’s best team (7-1) Griff in week nine, Matt not only scored over 1,000, he actually shocked the world and beat Griff. Sadly for Matt, neither the record or the win turned things around for him. He would lose three out of his last five, finally failing to break 1,000 in the season’s last game. The streak ended at 24 and it still stands to this day, with Bob coming close, but ultimately falling three short of the record.

To answer the question on how this record was ignored up until the week it was tied…first, despite scoring over 1,000 in every game, the points were not translating into wins. Matt was just 11-13 during the streak. Second (and what’s more amazing), Matt broke 1,500 only once during the streak, ironically, it was in defeat; 1,839-1,662 to David.
