Robio becomes the first back-to-back champion – Title Game, 2000
After a stunning run the previous season, I entered the 21st Century as the early favorite, and out of the gate I looked unstoppable. After losing my first game in week two (my first defeat in 13 games), I rolled through the league. I was 6-1, first in the league in scoring, with two weekly high scores. In week eight, I got dropped by Dave, despite scoring 1,823, but it was only a hiccup. I won my next two, despite the fact I couldn’t break 1,300 in either.
In week eleven, I faced off with Rich Mullin in one of the most anticipated regular season match ups in league history. It was 8-2 Robio (at this time, still first in the league in scoring) against 7-3 Rick Mullin (second in the league in scoring). The winner would have the fast track to the #1 seed. Despite scoring a decent game, I fell to Rick, 1,619-1,394. The defeat was upsetting, as I really wanted that top seed. I would end up winning my next two, before losing my season finale.
Despite being 10-4, second in scoring and the #2 seed, I didn’t feel that confident heading into the playoffs. It had been seven weeks since my last weekly high score and even though I always broke 1,000, I only scored over 1,500 twice in the second half of the season. All while #1 seeded Rick had two weekly high scores, breaking 1,500 points in five out of his last six. In the quarter finals, I struggled, but luckily I was facing 6-8 David, who had failed to score more than 1,200 points in a game, eleven times that year. I escaped with a 1,097-1,012 victory.
In the semis, I faced Chris who had won six of his last seven games,. Quickly things looked bad. Chris dominated the weekend and by the time Sunday came to an end, he had 306-point lead. I had one player, my star running back, second year RB, Edgerrin James. The game was a classic and James went off, producing a stunning 340-pt night. I won by 34 points. I was back in thetitle game; I was back playing Griff again. Although the game was closer, I still ended up beating Griff 1,448-1,197. Two seasons, two Robio championships.
