The Pointless

Molly’s opponents fail to hit 1,000 in eight-straight games, 2008

After a decade of Robioland football, nobody had a higher winning percentage than Molly (61-42, .592). Now Molly was a good team, but no one would dare call her a great team, yet here she was winning nearly sixty percent of her games.

Was she just lucky? It was a fair question to ask. She was sixth in scoring among current teams. She was 7th in 1,500-point games and 6th in games over 1,000.

Again, good, but not great.

It just seemed like Molly’s opponents always took a week off when they played her. In fact, after a decade, her opponent’s average (1,192ppg) was the lowest among active teams.

But that’s the name of the game. That’s how fantasy football works. There is luck and there is lots of luck…and then there is 2008.

Heading into her 7th season, Molly had something to prove. Despite all the success; four winning seasons, five playoff trips, three division titles, Molly needed to step up and do some scoring. She had yet to ever break 1,300ppg in a season.

At first it didn’t look to good. She didn’t break 700 in a week one defeat. The following week though, Molly had one of the toughest defeats ever in the league, falling to Bob 1,702-1,633. It was the 13th most points scored in a defeat. However, Molly would get the ball rolling and win three of her next four games. At 3-3, she was doing fine in the standings, but she was top dog in scoring. In fact, she had scored over 1,387 in her last five games.

However, her opponents were scoring too. Only one (Griff) didn’t break 1,000. In fact, the lowest point total after Griff was Don’s 1,258.

In week seven, Molly faced a hot (5-1) Burrier team, who failed to crack 1,000 only once so far. He would do it a second time against Molly (for the record, he would do it three more times that year). Next up, She faced an awful Matt team. He was only 1-6, but still, he failed to break 1,000 only once prior. He did it a second time against Molly. Eric was next and he couldn’t even break 600. Masterson took a swing in week ten and he came close (997), but three points shy was all that it took.

Fast forward and Molly’s last three regular season opponents would all fail to break 1,000 (David only scored 382 points). Amazingly, two opponents (Eric and David) would crack the top-20 lowest scores ever in Robioland. Seven weeks and seven opponents failing to break 1,000. It was amazing. Hell, four of them were the weekly low scores.

However, you couldn’t rip Molly. She kept scoring during this time, breaking 1,100 six times, with three scores more than 1,350. In fact, Molly finished 3rd in scoring.

In the quarterfinals, Molly did get lucky. She failed to break 1,000 as a No 1 seed, but luckily for her, Eric only produced 850, making it a stunning eight straight opponents who couldn’t produce 1,000 points. In the semis though, Don did break 1,000. In fact, he scored 1,281, which was enough to upset the top seeded Mollipop.
