Richard Burrier drafts L. Tomlinson with the first pick – Draft – First Pick, 2003
In early 2003, after a few years of discussion, the league officially became a keeper league. In that year’s draft, everyone could keep any two players, plus one player they drafted after round eight. They would have to use their first, second and (if need be) third round picks on these keepers (The following year we switched to the category keeper system). Now let’s rewind back in time for a moment; In2001, the league’s draft order started being based on the previous year’s results. However, all new members were given the top picks.
After the fact, many league members (including myself) were unhappy with the new members getting the first picks. So in 2002, I reversed it…new members were placed in the back of the first round, thus the first picks would go to the league’s worst teams from the previous year. 2002was Rich Burrier’s first year in Robioland. He was in the league’s toughest division and he didn’t do as good as he predicted he would. He finished 6-8 (11th in scoring) and out of the playoffs. He was set up to be the 3rd seed in the 2003 draft. However, the fantasy god’s gave him some love when Brian and Jimmy (the two worst teams in 2002) left the league. Burrier fell into the the first pick in the 2002 draft.
At the same time, we decided to turn the league into a keeper league (starting in 2003 though, so any player taken ’02 could be kept). He did have some choices; Portis, (Ricky) Williams, Holmes, Alexander, Faulk, but in reality, Tomlinson was #1 on almost all mock boards. Rich took Tomlinson, won the championshipthat year and has kept LT ever since. Rich has won the division every year since that pick (four straight years). In 2007, Robioland finally added a three-year limit on keepers. After five years, Burrier was set to finally lose LT after the 2007 season (Update: Burrier traded LT to Robio, who traded him to Matt). FUN FACT: If we didn’t change the system and continued to let the new teams have the top picks in round one, Bob would have had that top pick.
