The Forgettable Four

Eric, Molly, Jeff and Masterson hit rock bottom together, 2010

While someone always has to win a championship every year, another team has to be the worst. One team really has to stand below and beyond everyone else in the basement.

Well, in 2010, the four teams that failed to qualify for the playoffs went out of their way to own the bottom floor. The foursome of Eric, Molly, Jeff and Rob M went a combined 12-40 on the season. Worse yet, half of those wins came against each other.

QUICK HISTORY: Prior to 2010, the worst any other collection of non-playoff teams did was 13-39. That was the 2006 foursome of Calderon, Matt, Eric and one-win David.

I would argue that the 2010 foursome was much, much worse.

First, the 2010 foursome finished just 9-41 on the year, two games back of the 2006 group. However, it wasn’t just about wins and loses.

The 2006 group averaged 1,115ppg, producing two weekly high scores and only three weekly low scores (all David’s).

The 2010 foursome averaged only 1,040ppg, producing only one weekly high score and nine of the league’s 13 weekly low scores.

Rob and Eric become only the 4th and 5th teams in league history to not record at least three wins, becoming the only two-win duo to do it the same season.

Jeff and Eric’s point totals each cracked the bottom 20 of all-time. Jeff was 15th overall (1,061), while Eric become only the fourth person to fail to average at least 1,000. His 919ppg was the third lowest of all time as of 2010.

And finally, these teams were particularly bad at the end of the season. In the final six weeks of the season, they went a combine 2-22 (one win was Molly over 5-win Burrier, while the other was Eric over Molly).

In the end, the foursomes’ seasons all ended up in the bottom fifteen among the league’s 140 seasons (as of 2010). Jeff finished the best at #125 (thanks to a four-game winning streak), Masterson hit #133, while Molly was one spot back at #134. Eric’s 2010 ended up as the third worst season ever at #138.
