The Dynamic Duo

Griff and Molly get higher than anyone ever has, breaking the combine scoring record in week 13, 2011

Heading into week thirteen, no one really cared too much about the match up that featured Griff and Molly. The fact is, this game didn’t have much of a purpose. Both teams already had their invites into the post-season party. Molly already earned the division title and the top seed. The only question was the scoring title. She had a 205-point lead over Masterson. For Griff, he already had the fourth seed locked up. He couldn’t go higher and he couldn’t fall further down.

But leave it up to a Coomer, or rather two Coomers to make this final game of the regular season important.

For Molly, it felt like a typical weekend. This is what happens when your team averages over 1,500 PPG for the season. In week thirteen, Aaron Rodgers exploded for 564 points, while three others (Mendenhall, Cruz and Floyd) all broke 200. She scored 1,785 points. It would be the fifth time Molly would break 1,700 points. But this time it wasn’t enough.

Her husband put together one of the most complete games of the season.

First, he got a season high 462 from Philip Rivers, plus 322 points from the 49ers defense. Still, this wasn’t a two-man effort. Everyone came through and I mean everyone…even the kicker. Four other players broke 200+ points, with Wes Welker coming up just two points short of it. Hell, place kicker David Akers hit 160 points.

When all the math was added up, Griff had a career high 2,155 points.

When you add Molly and Griff’s scores together, it was a record. The two Coomer’s produced a combined 3,950 points, just 50 points shy of the league’s first 4,000 point game. Their combined score crushed an eight-year old record (Robio and Rob M scored a combined 3,821 in 2003).

Note: While Molly lost the game, she scored enough points to lock down her third career scoring title, becoming the fifth team to lock down both the top seed and the scoring title.

Sadly though this would be the final high for both their seasons. Both would suffer first round defeats in the quarterfinals. Ironically for Griff, he lost to Colby, who broke 2,000 in their quarters match up.
