Robio puts up the most wins in a regular season ever, 2010
Winning in head-to-head football isn’t always about greatness. It also involves some luck. However, to win nearly all of your games, it involves both greatness and luck, as I learned in 2010.
2009 was a rough one for dear old Robio. I suffered through a tragic 2-11 season, my worst ever. I needed to rebound and not just with some 7-6 season and a trip to the playoffs. I needed to feel special again. I needed to feel great.
Sadly in week one, I felt like shit after dropping my first game to Griff. This would be my 12th defeat in my last 14 games (dating back to 2009).
The following week though I caught a break when Eric failed to show up, handing me a less-than-breathtaking 1,395-987 win. However, the following week I did beat Molly in one of the most impressive games in league history, beating her 1,801-1,707. Molly’s point total was the 5th most scored in a defeat.
Finally, things were going my way.
I would continue my winning ways over Burrier, Don and Colby. Granted, I never scored over 1,400 and at that point in the season none of those three were considered impressive opponents, yet wins were wins.
However, in week seven I beat the preseason favorite Bob quite easily (1,479-1,028). Two weeks later, I knew this was my season when I took down the scoring leader Calderon, 1,562-1,351.
At 7-1 I was golden.
Down the stretch things got even easier as three of my last five opponents were the league’s three worst teams. I won them all of them, plus my re-match against Griff (my lone loss) and just like that I became the first team to finish the regular season with only one loss.
As the top seed in the playoffs, my team suddenly got hot, producing back-to-back 1,700-pt games, but like so many recent Robio teams, they collapsed in the final weekend. I lost to Bob in the finals, 1,283-948.
In the end, my 12-1 team was both great (third in scoring, no low scores, no games below 1,000) and lucky, my opponent’s were last in scoring, producing six games below 1,000. Both Colby and Bob (two of the top five teams) had their worst game against me, while Calderon had his second-to-worst regular season game against me.
While I didn’t win the title, I became the only person to finish the full year with just two defeats (14-2). However, three teams did finish 14-3 back when we played 14 regular season games. Those teams all won the title.
