Bob starts the season 5-1 and misses the playoffs – Week Fourteen, 2003
The 2003 season was Bob’s first and he wasted little time putting up some wins. He rolled out winning three of his first four, but little was impressive about it. He only averaged 1,127ppg. However, in the next two weeks, Bob nailed down back-to-back 1,600+ games; the second being a weekly high score. Six games into the season, Bob was sitting pretty at 5-1. Compared to the league’s other expansion teams, Bob looked like a seasoned veteran, holding a two-game lead over (3-3) Matt and a four-game lead over (1-5) Rich Calderon and (1-5) Jeff.
With all those wins, it was easy to overlook the simple fact that Bob’s opponents kept failing to show up. In fact, in all five of his wins, his opponents failed to crack 900 in any of the games. What would happen if Bob’s foes actually broke 1,000? We soon found out. Bob’s luck flew out the window. Even though in the next five weeks, Bob’s opponents never broke 1,400, he couldn’t break 1,000 and just like that, Bob went from 5-1 to 5-5.
Suddenly Bob was struggling to stay out of last place in the division, two back of Dave, one behind Matt and tied with me. However, Bob had nothing to offer and dropped his next two. In week thirteen though, Bob upset David, knocking him out of first place in the division.
Heading into the week fourteen, Bob still had a legit shot to make it to the playoffs. First and foremost, he just needed to beat me. However, his chances were not good since I had won nine of ten after an 0-4 start. Even if he lost though, he would still have a shot if Eric lost. And even if Eric won, Bob still had a shot if Jeff won and Calderon didn’t. Well, we allknow what happened…Calderon’s miracle comeback, and just like that, Bob became the only team to start the season 5-1 and not make the playoffs.
