Robio scores 1,823 and still loses to David – Week Eight, 2000 Dave hands Robio his 1st playoff defeat – Semi-Finals, 2001
MATCH UP #1 – By week eight in 2000, I was clearly the cream of the crop. I entered the game winning 17 out of my last 18 games (20-4 overall). Dave was crawling along at 10-12 over the first year and a half in Robioland. Dave had only broken 1,500 points twice, while I had done it 12 times. In fact, I rolled into the game with back-to-back weekly high scores (1,919 and 2,321). Dave really had no chance in week eight.
However, like they say, ‘On any given Sunday’. Despite scoring over 1,200 only once all season, Dave scored a career high 1,948. He would need almost every point as I scored 1,823 for the game. The
3,771 points is still to this day the third highest scoring game (and the highest when neither team breaks 2,000). My 1,823 is the most points scored in a loss. Dave would only break 1,200 one more time the remainder of the season. Fun Fact: Dave would continue to be a thorn in my side, with a career 7-9 record.
MATCH UP #2 – After back-to-back titles in the first two years of the league, I got off to a horrid start in 2001, dropping my first four. At the same time, rookie Jason Carpenter was rolling through the league at a record setting pace. Eventually I turned things around, winning ten of my next eleven, including my first playoff game. Sitting in the semis, I was one game away from taking on Jason in the title game, with a chance for a three-peat. Sitting in my way was little old David Hightower. His seasonwas just the opposite of mine. After a week one defeat, he won five straight. After ten weeks, he was 7-3, but he fell apart at the end, dropping his final four, losing out on the division. As the 6th seed, Dave took down an overrated Jimmy, who shamefully won his division with a 7-7 record.
The win wasn’t too impressive and despite splitting the season series against me, Dave came into the semi-finals a major underdog. However, Dave got hot and scored the most points he had scored in eight weeks, while I produced my lowest point total in ten weeks. Dave shocked the world with a 1,436-1,075 win over #2 Robio. Despite the fact Jason didn’t produce a lot of points, Dave was no match for him in the title game and lost 1,273-920. Just so you know, if I had played in the title game, I would have won by over 500 points.
