Accomplishment By Picks

Rob Murray

Below is a chart. That chart tells us all the important accomplishments by pick. What did we learn?

We learned that it’s good to pick first. Of course, we knew that already. The top pick in the draft has made it to the postseason in 18 of the 20 seasons. The first overall pick has earned six top seeds, five scoring crowns and been to six title games, winning it all a total of four times. They were me in 1999, Burrier in 2003, Matt in 2009 and Matt again in 2017. This year, I pick first overall.

When it comes to just championships, the 9th overall pick is second best with three. They all came in one four-year period: me in 2012, Calderon the following season and Griff in 2015. Overall, the 9th pick has nine total accomplishments. On top of those three titles, they have two runner ups, two top seeds and two scoring crowns. This year, Don picks 9th.

If you break in down in thirds, as in the teams that missed the playoffs the year before (picks 1-4), teams that lost in the quarters the year before (picks 5-8) and teams that did well the year before (picks 9-12), we get…

Picks 1-4 have 27 total accomplishments, but again, 17 of those belong to the top pick. In total, these four have produced 8 champions. However, the second pick has been the least productive of all the picks. In 2001, Jason earned the title, top seed and scoring crown with the second pick. No one else has ever done anything. This year, Griff has the second pick.

Picks 5-8 have four championships, 7 runner ups (so 11 total trips to the finals), six top seeds and just two scoring crowns. Picks five and six are the only two picks that have never produced a mug. This year, picks five and six are Eric and Masterson. However, pick five has been a runner up three times and pick six has earned four top seeds.

Picks 9-12 have done well, earning 7 championships, five runner ups, six top seeds and 7 scoring crowns. Oddly enough, the 11th pick (typically the runner up from the year before, has earned one of each. All four accomplishments were accomplished by Griff. In 2004, he was a runner-up and top seed, picking 11th. Then the following season, he earned a scoring crown and an actual crown picking 11th.

League champions have done well. Bob (2005) and Matt (2008) are the only teams to come off a championship and not make it back to the playoffs. While we have three repeat champions in this league, I don’t recall where I picked in 2000, so I’m not including it here. However, the 12th pick does have four scoring crowns, which is second most. This year, Neatock is picking 12th.
