Here are you first, second and third team preseason All-Robio selections. I tried not to pick all the obvious favors, although you’ll see plenty of familiar names.
I have a three-way tie for most. Myself, Michael and Matt each have four on this list, although only the latter has a first-team player. Calderon and Matt are the only two with two 1st-team players. I did have Griff producing one All-Robio player with Damien Williams, but when the Chiefs grabbed LeSean McCoy, I had to drop him. Thus, Griff is the only person to not have a player on the preseason All-Robio list.
FIRST-TEAM
QB – Patrick Mahomes (Colby) A year after he looked like a pro playing 2019 Madden on rookie level, it’s not much of a stretch to say Mahomes will regress a little this season. Still, he could regress a lot of still be the top quarterback by a long mile. Look for him to pass for just under 5,000 yards on the season and for his touchdowns to fall somewhere in the low 40’s.
RB – Christian McCaffrey (Rob M) Last season, McCaffrey totaled 326 touches, but 107 of those were receiving. Look for his rush totals to jump to about 250, which means he’ll easily break 2,000 total yards this season.
RB – Saquon Barkley (Matt) Look for Barkley to lead the league in both carries and touches, as he’s the only real option in Jersey. However, his yards per rush will remain inconsistent (he’s a modern day Barry Sanders: -1, 1, -1 then 20 yard gain), Thus, he’ll miss out on the vaunted 2,000 total yards.
WR – Deandre Hopkins (Rich C) Last year he caught 115 passes for 1,572 yards and 12 scores. Yet, it still feels like he’s got a little more ceiling left in him. This year, the Texans will have a slightly better offensive line, a more dangerous weapon in the backfield and healthy receivers on the other side of the field. This should open things up for Hopkins.
WR – Julio Jones (Rich B) Considering the fact that Julio didn’t catch his first touchdown until week nine of last year, it just goes to show, how dominate this guy could be. Touchdowns have always been his problem. He’s only hit double digits scores once (10 in 2012), which seems like a travesty. This year, he’ll get another 180 targets and score 13 times.
TE – Travis Kelce (Eric) There are elite tight ends, but then there is Kelce, who has become the new (and healthy) Gronk. He’s a first-round worthy tight end, who will dominate all others. Look for him to challenge the 1,400-yard mark, which would be a record for a tight end.
PK – Jason Tucker (Matt) No team is better at getting bogged down in the red zone like the Ravens. Tucker will lead the league in both attempted field goals and made field goals.
DST – Houston Texans (Rich C) They get to face everyone else from the AFC South twice, plus Dolphins, Broncos and Redskins. That’s not a murderers row. The only negative…they’ll be on the road in Philly for our title game.
SECOND-TEAM
QB – Carson Wentz (Matt) When healthy, just two seasons ago, Wentz was the league’s top quarterback in fantasy football. With DeSean Jackson and a more threatening running game, look for Neatock’s boy to jump back to elite status.
RB – James Conner (Robio) The Steelers back hasn’t gotten a ton of love this offseason as there have been whispers of a timeshare. People forget, before he got cancer, this dude was a 5-star college stud, who was projected to be a first-round talent when he entered the NFL.
RB – Dalvin Cook (Michael) Honestly, if I was picking second in the draft, I would have taken Cook over the rest. He’s a solid back, who is finally healthy and sitting in the perfect offensive system. 1,200 yards rushing and 500 receiving, plus all goal line carries equals lots of fantasy points.
WR – Tyreek Hill (Don) Look for Hill secure a third straight All-Robio award, as the leading receiver in the league’s most prolific offense. Consider this, the most he’s ever been targeted in a season is 137. Imagine the goods he’d deliver if he got targeted as much as the rest of the elite receivers.
WR – Devante Adams (Bob) After four years of prep, Adams finally joined the ranks of the elite, thanks to 169 targets from Aaron Rodgers. For him, it’s all comes down to whether Rodgers is on the field. Look for him to break 1,500 yards for the first time in his career.
TE – Zach Ertz (Matt) Everyone has Kittle as the second best tight end, but my money is on Ertz. With a healthy Wentz on the field, his former security blanket should be back carrying a large load. Let’s not forget, it’s Ertz who led all tight ends in targets last year.
PK – Greg Zuerlein (Michael) He’ll battle Harrison Butker for most extra points. 50+ of those will add up. He should also hit about 30-31 fields on the season
DST – Cleveland Browns (Robio) The offense gets all the talk, but if Cleveland is really a contender, then they’ll need their defense to step up. Last year, this solid unit was already ranked 8th.
THREE-TEAM
QB – Lamar Jackson (Robio) In just seven starts, Jackson rushed for nearly 600 yards. Let’s say he runs a little less per game this season, that still means he’s going to be heading into Michael Vick 1,000 yards rushing territory. Give him eight rushing scores and that’s about 160 points per game with rushing stats. If you take his stats from his seven starts last year and add it up for a full season, he would have finished as the 7th best quarterback.
RB – Chris Carson (Rich B) With Penny hiding in the shadows, Carson is not a sexy pick for an All-Robio award, but the dude just keeps on chugging along. In last season’s playoffs, he was the best back in football, scoring three straight 300-point games and over 1,000 fantasy points. Last year in total, he got 247 carries and that was with Mike Davis eating up 150 of his own touches. Davis is gone and even if Penny gets two-thirds of those, that means Carson will approach 300 touches. Good news for a guy who averaged 4.7 yards per carry.
RB – Ezekiel Elliot (Robio) He’s back! In three seasons, he has averaged 311 fantasy points per game. That’s the highest among all backs in football in that time. Last year he scored over 4,500 in 15 games, despite scoring only six rushing touchdowns. That’s not going to be that low again.
WR – JuJu Smith-Schuster (Michael) 168 of Big Ben’s targets are out the door. Someone has to make up those numbers. JuJu, of course, was targeted 166 times and nearly hit 1,500 yards. He’s the undisputed man in Pittsburgh. If he can get his touchdown total into double digits, he will compete for a first-team award.
WR – Antonio Brown (Rich C) I can’t keep picking the obvious choices for All-Robio wide receivers, so let’s throw in a dark horse. Brown has been a mess this preseason, doing everything he can not to be on the field. However, to me, there is nothing more dangerous than an angry man with a chip on his wide shoulders. Look for him to deliver “fuck Big Ben” numbers this season.
TE – George Kittle (Rich B) Boring, I know. There are these three elite tight ends and everyone else. Barring injury, I don’t see how Kelce, Ertz and Kittle don’t finish top-three.
PK – Will Lutz (Jeff) With an aging Drew Brees, the Saints just smell like a team that’s going to kick more field goals this year.
DST – Chicago Bears (Michael) I can’t put the Bears defense first, because historically, the first defense taken in the draft, never finishes first at the end of the season. Who am I to defy history?
