2015 Top Free Agent Grabs | Through Week 6

A good grab can change a team’s season from bad to good.

I count 15 good-to-great free agent pick ups so far this season. These are important. These kind of decisions can make or break a season. Hell, I put in a bid for four of the top five on this list and lost all four. I lost Freeman by $5. If I would have gotten Freeman, I would have two more wins. Let’s go ahead take a look at who I ranked the number one grab this season…so far.

15. Colby adds Charcandrink West, RB KC | Week 6 ($56) Obviously it is way too early to rank this guy. He hasn’t started a game, but the Chiefs’ coaches are saying all the right things, comparing him to Jamaal Charles. K.C. likes to run the ball and Knile Davis sits deep in the dog house. If I was Jeff, I would have dropped $70 on this guy easily. You know, you can’t take you auction money with you?

14. Molly adds Ted Ginn, WR CAR | Week 5 ($5) With LeSean McCoy unable to get healthy, Molly has gone three-wide with Ted Ginn, who has suddenly become a top target for Cam Newton. Granted, being a top target in Carolina is not the same as being a top target in Green Bay, but Ginn leads the team in targets, averaging 148 PPG. He just needs to have a great game or two to move out of the WR2 category.

13. Rich C adds Donte Moncrief, WR IND | Week 2 ($5) The Colts had T.Y. Hilton. They went and got Andre Johnson. They drafted Phillip Dorsett. Yet, it’s Moncreif who is the team’s best receiver so far. The second-year wideout has 24 receptions, 278 yards and three touchdowns.

12. Rich C adds Kamar Aikem, WR BAL | Week 5 ($0) This is more of a projection, assuming he’ll keep up his numbers once Steve Smith returns, but over the last month, take away one tragic game against the Bengals in week four, this guy has better numbers than Demaryius Thomas. He has an 89-yard game, a 77-yard game and a 78-yard game. If he can keep that up, he’ll be a 1,000-yard receiver by season’s end.

11. Rob M adds Antonio Gates, TE SD | Week 2 ($2) It’s only been one game, but call me impressed. Gates looked motivated coming off his four-game suspension. He caught nine balls, including two touchdowns, scoring 304 fantasy points. If he’s legit and his old legs hold up, Masterson might have finally filled a hole on his team.

10. Rich C adds Isaiah Crowell, RB CLE | Week 5 ($1) On a team that features Jeremy Hill and Carlos Hyde, Crowell could be the best of the bunch. Right now all three are RB2s (actually Hyde is too inconsistent to be a RB1), but Crowell is the only one who has back-to-back 200+ fantasy games and three out of his last five games. The only question is, can he hold off Duke Johnson, who has been earning more playing time as the season has gone on?

9. Eric adds Allen Hurns, WR JAC | Week 5 ($9) All the talk in Jacksonville was about the other Allen on the Jaguars (Robinson) and I get it. Robinson does lead the team in targets (49) and yards per catch (18 per game). However, he only catches about 44% of those passes. Hurns on the other hand has caught 75% of his 36 targets. He’s currently the 13th best WR in the league, on pace for 1,300 yards.

8. Matt adds Travis Benjamin, WR CLE | Week 2 ($51) The former Miami Hurricane exploded out of the gate with 588 points, but still, $51 for a guy who has never had a proven, consistent track record. Since those two games, he’s still been decent, but not $51 decent, averaging 148 PPG.

7. Eric adds Tyler Eifert, TE CIN | Weeks 2 ($21) He’s currently the third best tight end in football, thanks to a pair of 300-point games. However, I’d like to see him remain consistent. Getting shutout in week three is unacceptable.

6. Rich B adds Tyrod Taylor, QB BUF | Week 2 ($5) He wasn’t even the starter until the end of the preseason, yet he’s currently the fifth best quarterback in fantasy. What he does with his legs matters. He’s rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns. However, he’s had three 240+ yard passing games and a pair of three touchdown games.

5. Colby adds Chris Johnson, RB ARI | Week 2 ($12) He was suppose to just be short-term relief until Ellington returned, but the old man never gave the starting job back up. Johnson is on pace for 1,300 yards rushing, 1,500 in total and is the 7th best running back in fantasy. His only knock? He hasn’t scored in four of his five games.

4. Molly adds Dion Lewis, RB NE | Week 2 ($11) Rule #1 in fantasy football…never trust a Patriots running back. Yet, Lewis is letting Molly break that rule. He’s 7th in average points per game (246.5 points per game). Oddly enough, he’s not doing it with a ton of carries. He’s only had double-digit carries once this season, but he’s doing it with receptions (23 on the season so far) and is on pace for 1,600 total yards.

3. Griff adds Gary Barnidge, TE CLE | Week 5 ($12) Holy fuckfest look what this guy has done recently. He’s scored 270, 210 and 338 points. That’s Rob Gronkowski numbers. In fact, he’s the second best tight end in football.

2. Jeff adds Andy Dalton, QB CIN | Week 3 ($2) Averaging a stunning 350 points per contest, Big Red is the second best quarterback in football, behind only Tom Brady. He’s on pace to throw for over 4,800 yards, throwing just two interceptions to 11 touchdowns.

1. Rich B adds Devonta Freeman, RB ATL | Week 2 ($27) Technically, Freeman was drafted…by Burrier. However, he cut him after week one and picked him back up the following week after Trevor Coleman went down. It might be the best $27 Burrier has ever spent. Freeman is looking like the greatest free agent pick in league history. Since becoming the starter, Freeman has delivered a 566-point game, 478-point game, 454-point game (prior to Thursday night’s game). Stunningly, Burrier has only started Freeman once (the 454-point game), actually benching him against the Saints, one of the worst D’s in the league.

Wait? What?

Yep, despite averaging 499.3 points per game as a starter, Rich just benched Freeman for Danny Woodhead. As of this writing, Freeman had 432 fantasy points Thursday night  (156 yards and his ninth and tenth touchdown on the season). What the hell, Rich. I should make you cut him just for benching the league’s best receiver.
