IF YOU READ ONE THING I POST THIS YEAR…LET IT BE THIS.
If you recall, I told you two seasons ago, that there will be changes made to the scoring system. Well, I’ve dug in deep, did my homework, calculated the math and I’ve come up with the new scoring system.
NOTE: These changes don’t go into effect this coming season. They go into effect in 2014. Why? Because, players have been drafted and kept based on the scoring system as is. People should be able to ride those players out.
Now if the league wants to vote 12-0 to put the rules into place this season, you have that option, but it would literally need to be 12-0.
Moving on. First, the goals.
REDUCE QUARTERBACK SCORING As we’ve all pointed out, quarterback scoring has been off the charts lately. Often the 25th best quarterback would outproduce the top RB. I have no problem with the quarterbacks being the top scorers, I just don’t want them doubling, sometimes tripling everyone else.
SIMPLIFY I wanted to make it easier. If a running back runs for 80 yards and a TD, the simple math should be 220 points. Done.
MAKE CHANGES WITHOUT EFFECTIVE THE RECORD BOOK This was the tricky part. We take great pride in our history and records. No scoring change was going to fuck with that. To do that, I had to adjust small things (which I’ll get to in a moment) as well as defense. Speaking of defense…
LOWER DEFENSIVE SCORING SLIGHTLY There is no other league like ours when it comes to DST. A great DST can score as much as a top-five WR. While I’m proud of our defensive scoring system, it’s a little high. I want them to matter, just not Calvin Johnson matter.
SO WHAT DID I CHANGE?
First, I eliminated the -2 for every rush, reception and incomplete pass. Now on, if Doug Martin rushes for 100 yards, that’s +2 per yard, that’s 200 points. Before if he carried the ball 23 times, he would lose 46 fantasy points. No more.
QB Yards have always been 1 yard, 1 point. No more. Now it’s going to be 3 yards, 2 points. Why this change? Simple. In football, a 300-yard passing game should equal a 100 yard rushing game. Now it does.
If DeMarco Murray rushes for 100 yards, he’ll get 200 fantasy points. If Drew Brees throws for 300 yards, he’ll get 200 fantasy points.
Offensive player turnovers: Currently a fumble or a Interception is -40 points. It’s now going to be -30 points.
Defensive scoring adjustments.
Currently, if a defense gets a TD, it’s 60 points. If they force a turnover, it’s 30 points. In the new system, a DST TD will only be 40 points. A forced turnover will be 20 points.
The last two changes (turnovers and DST) are to keep the record books intact.
That’s it.
Based on my math (using four current teams and CBS projections), on average, this new scoring system will add just 15 points per game, per team. Thus, the record book is safe.
Quarterbacks will still be the top scorers. I’ve set the CBS site to the new scoring, so if anyone wants to see how it will effect players, you can. I will change it back in two weeks.
Currently, Adrian Peterson will score as much as the 11th best QB. In reality, it’s probably closer to 8th or 9th, because CBS doesn’t project sacks.
Now Wide Receivers will dip slightly below RBs now, because backs are gaining more points with the elimination of -2. In the new system, Calvin Johnson is projected to score as much as the 8th best RB.
As for D’s, instead of the top D being about the same as the 5th best WR, it’s now equal to the16th best WR.
Now this is a big drop. However, during the first season of doing this, I would rather be cautious and have slightly lower scoring. If it’s too low, we’ll bring D scoring back up some.
Keep in mind though…after breaking down some scoring using current teams, even with the new scoring system, DST scoring accounts for 10.1% of a team’s scoring (before it was 11.9%). In most leagues, D’s make up about 5.2 percent of a team’s score…so we still double the average.
Anyhow, that is it.
If you have thoughts to share, now is the time to share it.
