The 2013 keepers are in and what’s the point of having me in the league if I don’t sit here and judge each and every one of you.
ROBIO
Matt Ryan, QB ATL (Round 3) | Marshawn Lynch, RB SEA (Round 7) I had one big decision to make and that was in category two. Do I keep RGIII, the top quarterback in 2012 coming off a late season ACL injury for three more years, or keep Marshawn Lynch for one more year? Yes, down the road I’ll regret this decision, but I want to repeat and the best way to do that is with Matt Ryan and Marshawn Lynch.
ROB M
Doug Martin, RB TB (Round 2) | Julio Jones, WR ATL (Round 6) Rob’s keepers were pretty much no-brainers. Martin is projected to be a top-five back, thus a great get in the back half of the second round. Julio Jones should be considered a top-12 receiver again this year, thus is a steal in round six.
MATT
Mike Wallace, WR PIT (Round 3) | David Wilson, RB NYG (Round 8) | Tony Gonzalez, TE ATL (Round 14) Matt went with Wallace in category one. He’s got a new home in South Beach and is expected to be the top receiver option, but I still think he’s not worth a third-round keeper. Fact is, I don’t have Wallace in my top-20 among all receivers, which means if Matt wanted to just draft him, he would have been sitting there.
In category two, Matt flirted with keeping Matt Stafford, but that was insane to me. Wilson is a starting running back and that still matters in this league. Sure he’ll have to share carries with Andre Brown and he won’t get goal line touches, but he’s a decent RB2, which RB1 potential in the 8th round. Deep in the draft, Matt still gets Tony Gonzalez in the 14th round: all hail the sleeper king.
MOLLY
Adrian Peterson, RB MIN (Round 2) Okay, if Molly didn’t keep Adrian Peterson I would have kicked her out of the league. However, I don’t know for the life of me why she didn’t keep Victor Cruz in the 7th round. He’s been a top-12 WR for two straight years and Molly didn’t think that was worth the 91st pick in the draft? I almost feel like she made a mistake, but too bad. Each person is responsible for their own team and own keepers. This decision is worse than drafting Roy Helu in the third-round last year.
RICH B
Frank Gore, RB SF (Round 4) | Andrew Luck, QB IND (Round 7) | Sidney Rice, WR SEA (Round 14) Burrier had a tough choice in category one; Gore in round four or Jamaal Charles in the first (8th pick). I don’t want to say Rich made the wrong decision, but it’s not the choice I would have made. Gore is good and I think he has another year in him, but something tells me Rich could have drafted 1,000 yards and eight TDs with his fourth pick. This includes Gore who probably would have still been available there. However, the experts are predicting that Charles will be a top-five back this year. That’s tougher to draft with the 8th pick.
In round two, Burrier has been in love with Luck for a long time. I think he’s going to have a good year, but is he going to make some kind of leap into Rodgers/Brees territory? Doubt it. I still think Rob Gronkowski would have been the better pick. Yes, he’s hurt. Yes, he’s only keeper eligibility for one more year, but my guess is Luck would have been available in the 5-6 round, while Gronk, despite his injuries, could still go late in the second round or early third.
COLBY
Brandon Marshall, WR CHI (Round 3) | Russell Wilson, QB SEA (Round 8) | Randall Cobb, WR GB (Round 12) Not a bad hull by Colby. He’s got two top-10 wide receivers and Wilson, who could be ready to be a top-10 quarterback. Looking at Colby’s options, these three guys were his best options. However, the best part is that Colby has a top-three pick and is guaranteed to get either Arian Foster, Jamaal Charles or Calvin Johnson. Looks like a good team being built here just one pick in the draft.
JEFF
Torrey Smith, WR BAL (Round 5) | Cecil Short, WR JAC (Round 7) | Darren Sproles, RB NO (Round 13) Jeff’s options weren’t pretty, but they were the best he had. Torrey Smith is the top option in Baltimore now and he should be ready to handle the load. Cecil Shorts came on strong last year, but he’s still not getting a lot of love. I don’t get it. I think he’s a legit WR2 and will start for Jeff all season long. Jeff will try one more time with Sproles. His production dropped off last year, but most blame the loss of Sean Payton for that. With his return, Sproles could be a pretty decent RB2 again.
ERIC
Ray Rice, RB BAL (Round 1) | Alfred Morris, RB WAS (Round 6) | Alshon Jeffery, WR CHI (Round 15) You know, I would actually be tempted to keep Demaryius Thomas in category one over Ray Rice. Right now, the Broncos wide receiver is being drafted early first or late second in my fictional mock drafts. He’s the third best receiver on a lot of boards. Ray Rice is obviously a stud, but if Eric doesn’t take him, he’ll have a handful of running backs with tier one potential falling to him late in the first.
There is zero reason to think Alfred Morris won’t be a star again. It’s not even fair that Eric gets to start the season with two top-10 backs. As for Jeffery’s…okay. Maybe he does something.
RICH C
LeSean McCoy, RB PHI (Round 1) | Steven Ridley, RB NE (Round 6) | DeMarco Murray, RB DAL (Round 13) Calderon blows us all away by keeping three running backs. Ridley and Murray were no brainers. Maybe the Broncos D could sway me in the 10th (over Ridley), but probably not. McCoy though, that was the interesting one. No one doubts his skills, but Rich is giving up a chance to keep a pretty solid Vincent Jackson in the 5th round. Either Rich has less faith in Ridley or Murray (can’t blame him there) or he will use one of the three as trade bait later in the season.
GRIFF
Peyton Manning, QB DEN (Round 5) | C.J. Spiller, RB BUF (Round 7) | Mike Williams, WR TB (Round 11) Manning is a steal in the fifth round. Last year he was fantastic, but this year could be better with the addition of Wes Welker. C.J. Spiller in the 7th could be the keeper of the draft. He certainly should help Griff forget about Arian Foster. In fact, Spiller could be better than Foster by season’s end.
DON
Trent Richardson, RB CLE (Round 2) | Colin Kaepernick, QB SF (Round 8) Don gets Richardson with the 23rd pick, so that’s going to work out for him. In category two, he could have kept James Jones, but Kaepernick could be fantastic with a full season worth of stats (although losing Crabtree will hurt some).
BOB
A.J. Green, WR CIN (Round 2) | Seahawks, DST SEA (Round 10) | Cam Newton, QB CAR (Round 12) Now I’m not one to ever question Bob, but I don’t like his decision to keep Green in the second over Reggie Bush in the fourth. Now obviously we’ve all been fooled by Bush before and Bob has certainly be burned by him on many occasions. Still, if Bush really can produce in Detroit, he is a steal. As for Bob’s second pick…no he wouldn’t be able to re-draft Green in the second round, but there would have been a handful of stud receivers to pick from. In category two, are you ready for Cam Newton’s bounce back year?
