Technically with a 13-game schedule, the midway point of the season is actually midway through the week six games, but since 67-percent of the league gets to play ball in the quarterfinals, I’m deciding that the halfway point is after seven weeks of football.
So how’s your season going? If you’re in this league and your names isn’t Jeff or Matt, you can’t complain too much. Seven weeks in and we have what I consider one of the more balanced seasons ever. Sure you have Eric leading the pack with a 6-1 record, but you’re telling me that you would be shocked if, let’s say, current 8-seed Don beat him in the first-round of the playoffs? I wouldn’t.
Anyhow, let’s get the ball rolling on this bad boy.
PAST CHAMPIONS:
How were our former champs doing at the halfway point? 1999 – Robio Murray started 4-3…After an average beginning, Robio finish the regular season 7-0 (only perfect 2nd half). 2000 – Robio Murray started 6-1…Robio’s greatest start, but was only average down the stretch at 4-3, earning 2nd seed. 2001 – Jason Carpenter started 5-2…Good start for Jason, but a even better finish at 6-1, taking the top seed. 2002 – Robio Murray started 2-5…This season gives everyone hope. Finished a solid 6-1 and earned the third seed. 2003 – Burrier Bruisers started 4-3…Not overwhelming, but 4-3 was good enough to give him the division and 3rd seed. 2004 – Bob Castrone started 4-3…Bob rolled at the end, going 6-1, winning the division and taking the 2nd seed. 2005 – Griff Coomer started 3-4…Griff finished with a 5-1 record. He didn’t win the division, so he got the 4th seed. 2006 – Don Vozzola started 5-2…First champ to have a losing record in second half of season at 2-4, earning the 7th seed. 2007 – Matt Neatock started 3-4…Second team to start 1-4 and win the championship, winning seven of his last nine. 2008 – Don Vozzola started 3-4…Third team in four years to start 3-4 and win the championship. 2009 – Matt Neatock started 6-1…Matt ended up losing just two more games, earning both the scoring title and top seed. 2010 – Bob Castrone started 5-2…Bob would never struggle, finishing 4-2, earning the #4 seed. 2011 – Bob Castrone started 3-4….He would only go 3-3 down the stretch, but earned the 7-seed.
PRE-SEASON RANKINGS – A LOOK BACK:
* Below is the order of my preseason rankings #1 Tebow’s Before Hoes (Eric) – Dead on, baby. He’s riding high at 6-1, leading the league in scoring. It’s so rare when I get the top pick right.
#2 Quarter Pounders (Colby) – A stunning 2-5. If he can’t go 4-2 down the stretch, he’ll miss the post. However, despite the tough schedule, the guru will probably have Colby the favorite in five of his last six games.
#3 The Gooch Bruisers (Griff) – He’s got five wins and the most weekly high scores (three). The man just knows how to win.
#4 The Dick-Taters (Rich C) – Get this, Rich has five wins despite never breaking 1,500 points. Is he getting lucky? Let’s put it this way, if he had Jeff’s schedule, he’d be 2-5 and not 5-2. Of course most people would have a losing record with Jeff’s schedule.
#5 Young, Dumb & Full of Cam (Bob) – Despite the fact he’s done a nice job filling holes, Bob’s team has struggled to put up points at a consistent rate, failing to hit 1,300 five times. Still, he’s on pace to crash the post-season again and try for the three-peat.
#6 Romolicious (Robio) – After a smoking start to the season, I’ve cooled, dropping my last two. Am I suffer through bye-week blues or did I peak too soon?
#7 Glory Hole Days (Rob M) – Only one team has suffered a five-game losing streak within a season and made the post-season (it was Griff and he dropped six in a row), but that was way back in the 14-game regular season era.
#8 Kolb Gobblers (Matt) – One could argue, any person willing to associate Kevin Kolb with their team is just asking for defeat. Matt’s struggling. He’s dropped four-straight, averaging just 1,145 per game. If we want to play the “what if he had Jeff’s schedule” game again, Matt would be 0-7. Ouch.
#9 Tony Starks (Don) – After averaging just 1,074 the first three weeks, Don’s boys have picked up the pace, averaging 1,368ppg. I wouldn’t call him a dangerous team, but he’s certainly a playoff contender, capable of a first-round surprise.
#10 0O0O0 (Rich B) – This is such a typical Burrier team. One superstar (in the past, Tomlinson, now Drew Brees) makes him feel like a stud, but you know and I know that one week in the quarterfinals Brees will shit a brick and Burrier will be enjoying an early winter.
#11 Mollipop (Molly) – I’m always drastically wrong about one team I predict will miss the post-season and Molly is the lucky winner this year. She has yet to start a legit flex player, but she’s fourth in scoring, thanks to three 1,500+ games. All she needs is two more wins to lock down a post-season spot.
#12 Spider Two Wide Monkey (Jeff) – I predicted Jeff would finish last and I’ve been right, but it’s not all his fault. He’s played a brutal schedule.
FIRST-HALF PLAYERS
FIRST-TEAM ALL-ROBIO QB – Drew Brees (Rich B)…Yeah, he’s on fire. Clearly the league’s MVP so far averaging 435ppg. RB – Arian Foster (Griff)…On pace for his third straight year of first or second team All-Robio. RB – Ray Rice (Eric)…You see Chris Johnson, this is what the first pick in a draft is suppose to do. WR – Vincent Jackson (Rich C)…He’s averaged 419ppg in four games and 71 in two others. That’s actually not back for V-Jax. WR – A.J. Green (Bob)…I’m willing to predict he’ll finish as the top wideout by season’s end. TE – Tony Gonzalez (Matt)…How does this dude keep doing it? So far, Matt’s only true highlight of the season. PK – Jason Hanson (Colby)…It helps that the Lions offense can’t find the end zone. DST – Bears DST (Eric)…Amazing year. Their 290ppg average would be the greatest ever for a D if they can keep it up.
SECOND-TEAM ALL-ROBIO QB – Aaron Rodgers (Molly)…He’s thrown nine interceptions and no picks in his last two. RB – Jamaal Charles (Colby)…Despite the high numbers, he’s actually only broken 200 in half his games. RB – Adrian Peterson (Molly)…What ACL injury? Fuck that shit, that’s was Purple Jesus says. WR – Victor Cruz (Molly)…So I think we can clearly say Cruz > Nicks. WR – Reggie Wayne (Eric)…The best players outside of RGIII not drafted as a starter this season. TE – Rob Gronkowski (Rich B)… He seemed to struggle when Hernandez went out, but his numbers have gone back up lately. PK – Matt Bryant (Rich C)…He just picked him up on Tuesday. DST – Texans D (Molly)…Molly’s got the second and third best D’s in the league, but she can’t seem to start the right one each week.
THIRD-TEAM ALL-ROBIO QB – Robert the Griffin III (Robio)…He’s redshirted and barring an injury to Matt Ryan, he should never see my starting lineup. RB – C.J. Spiller (Griff)…He didn’t start week one, he got hurt and he currently splits time, yet here we are. You figure it out. RB – Frank Gore (Rich B)…I keep waiting for Gore to slow down, but he just won’t. Go Canes! WR – Brandon Marshall (Colby)…A big fan of this pick. Too bad I wasn’t a big enough fan to actually make it. WR – Roddy White (Robio)…Do you want a crazy stat? I’ve had only one WR (A. Johnson) finish as a All-Robio player since 2003. TE – Owen Daniels (Bob)…The top free agent pick up based on All-Robio status, filling a huge hole on Bob’s roster. PK – Greg Zuerlein (Matt)…Hey look, a kicker still on the team that drafted him. DST – Cardinals (Molly)…Based on the end of 2011, I guess we should have seen this coming.
THE ALL-DISAPPOINTMENT TEAM QB – Philip Rivers (Eric)…Drafted in the second round by Eric, but is currently ranked 27th among arms, averaging 212ppg. RB – Ben Green-Ellis (Griff)…He was kept to be a starter, but he’s averaging just 107ppg, last among regular starting backs. RB – Chris Johnson (Rob M)…Before hitting 478 points this past weekend, C.J. was averaging just 100ppg. WR – Greg Jennings (Matt)…He’s played in just three games and has failed to hit 80 points in any of the three. WR – Dez Bryant (Bob)…He’s had two 200+ games, but is averaging just 134ppg. Not good for a first-round pick. TE – Jermichael (Free Agent)…He’s been a bust, averaging just over 60ppg. Now no one wants him. PK – David Akers (Don)…He was the first kicker taken (by accident), but is just 25th among all kickers. DST – Ravens DST (Colby)…the second defense taken can’t stop the run, averaging just 123ppg.
IF THE POST-SEASON STARTED TODAY
#1 ERIC (6-1) vs. #8 DON (3-4) Now this would be fun, son vs. father in round one. This would guarantee one Vozzola would advance to the semis. Don leads the career series 12-6, but Eric did win their only match up this season.
#2 GRIFF vs. #7 BOB A lot of playoff history here. Griff and Bob have met three times in the post-season. Back in 2003, Bob beat Griff in the greatest title game ever, then in 2009, Griff knocked Bob out of the semis. The following year, Bob took care of Griff in round one.
#3 ROBIO vs. #6 RICH B Burrier just beat me in week five, but could he do it twice in one season? Of course Rich has never beaten me in the post-season. He’s 0-2 lifetime against me, losing in the first round in 2005 and 2010.
#4 RICH C vs. #5 MOLLY Like I mentioned last week, these two have never faced off in the playoffs. However, they did face off in week five and Calderon won.
OUTSIDE LOOKING IN:
#4 Pick – COLBY Colby’s lost his scoring touch just a bit, falling to 7th in the league. Still, it’s enough to get past Don and Matt, his two main competitors for the final playoff spot.
#2 Pick – ROB M Rob probably thought he was tanking his season by playing Chris Johnson. Now he’s moved up a spot in the standings.
#3 Pick – MATT Four straight defeats and no relief in site. Actually, he’s got struggling me next, followed by (1-6) Jeff and (2-5) Masterson. If Matt’s going to rally, this is the time to do it.
#1 Seed – JEFF (Chant) Arian Foster! Arian Foster! Arian Foster! Of course if Drew Brees keeps putting up 500-point games, Drew! Drew! Drew!
QUESTIONS FOR THE SECOND HALF
1. TEBOW’S BEFORE HOES (ERIC) IS BEING JUST THE FRONTRUNNER GOOD ENOUGH? Since scoring over 2,000 points two weeks ago, Erich has failed to reach 1,300 points, but this kind of shit just happens in the mid-season. I still have Eric penciled in as the league’s top dog. He’s got a great starting lineup and not even an injury at RB/WR could derail this team because Eric has two top-10 players (Morris/Wayne) on his bench. But the question I asked was, does Eric just roll with the team he has or does he try to even improve it by trading away that bench? It’s a question every frontrunner has had answered. Since 2005, five league champions had a player in their starting lineup that they traded for during the season.
2. THE GOOCH BRUISERS (GRIFF) IS GRIFF THE NEW BOB? As I’ve mentioned a dozen of times, Bob is a winner in this league. What is it again, six-straight nine win seasons? But don’t forget, before he won the last two league championships, Bob’s winning was reserved for the regular season and not so much for the post. He often did this winning with good, but not what was considered great rosters. Griff in 2012 appears to be where Bob was in 2010. You see Griff has rolled out three straight nine plus win seasons and his current roster certainly looks like another candidate. That year, Bob wasn’t predicted to win it all, but he was considered a top-tier team. At the halfway point of that year, Bob was second in scoring (just like Griff is now) and had five wins (Just like Griff now). He had the league’s best back in his final year as a keeper (Chris Johnson) just like Griff does now (Arian Foster). He was strong at quarterback (although not the best) with Tom Brady, just like Griff with Peyton Manning. He had an inconsistent Packers D, just like Griff. He also had a running back starting at RB2 who split time (Tomlinson), just like Griff (Spiller). Of course Bob took that time on a title game run…what can Griff do with his?
3. ROMOLICIOUS (ROBIO) HAVE MY LAST TWO WEEK’S BEEN FLUKES? After a 5-0 start, I lost two games in a row, failing to break 1,200 points in both. In the first defeat to Burrier, my team just failed to show up. Last week, I had some bye-week issues. With everyone back this week and facing a weak Matt team, this week should tell me a lot. Another rough outing and I have to worry. The biggest issue has been at running back. Both Lynch and McFadden have been disappointing. Lynch is currently ranked 11th, scoring just two rushing touchdowns all season long. He’s had just two games with over 200 fantasy points. McFadden has been worse. He’s 25th overall and he’s hit just 200 once all year. Players like Ryan/White/Harvin/V. Davis will keep me strong, my championship hopes will rely on these two becoming top-10 backs by season’s end.
4. THE DICK-TATERS (RICH C) CAN CALDERON’S SQUAD EVER BE GREAT? So far this season only four teams have yet to break 1,500 points, Jeff, Masterson, Don and Calderon. Of those four, only Rich has somehow managed to win more games than he’s lost. So what’s going down? Most of his players have performed at the level I predicted? Murray was a solid RB2 (before going down), while Vincent Jackson remains one of the most inconsistent fantasy players (I predicted he would have one catch this week after his 478-point explosion the previous week, but he actually managed to have two). What’s gone wrong is the great players haven’t really been…how you say, great. LeSean McCoy is just 17th in the league among all back. He’s averaging 63 points per games less than Ray Rice, picked one spot ahead of him. Calvin Johnson has shown flashes of greatness, but sprinkled in between his great games has been a couple of games below 100. On the season, he has one touchdown. Let me repeat that, Calvin Johnson has one touchdown through eight weeks. Rich needs superior play from his superstars.
5. MOLLIPOP (MOLLY) IS THE LAROD STEPHENS-HOWLING ERA READY TO BEGIN? Officially, the LSH era is not ready to begin. The Cardinals are facing the league’s toughest run defense this week so Molly is smartly keeping him on the bench this week. Still, it’s been well document that after seven weeks Molly has failed to solve her hole at the flex spot. And no matter how great Aaron Rodgers or Victor Cru or Adrian Peterson is, you can’t ask them to make up for glaring hole in the lineup. Right now, realistically Kenny Britt and Denarius Moore are the best options. Both are trying to overcome health issues to become their team’s #1 option at wide receiver. The problem I have with receivers is simply…they’re too inconsistent. Yes, even the great ones. This is why Stephens-Howling is key. Coming off a 310-point fantasy game, one has to believe the Cardinals see him as their #1 option. If he can be, if he can be a 20-carry per game guy, Molly could be the best team in the league. There, I said it.
6. YOUNG, DUMB & FULL OF CAM (Bob) WHAT THE FUCK, CAM? While I’ve officially called Philip Rivers the most disappointing quarterback so far this season, I could have easily placed Cam Newton into that spot. He was suppose to be equal to quarterbacks like Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers, but so far he’s barely better than Andrew Luck. He’s averaging just 280ppg, breaking 300 just once all year. Of course in this case, I can say, I told you so. How accurate was I? In my preseason predictions I pointed out that if you took away the two games against Tampa (a team that had given up), in the second half of the season, Newton averaged just 270 points per game. So over his last 15 games, his averaged hasn’t sniffed 300 points per game. Stunning. If Newton can’t get his act together, then Bob is going to need a major step up from his backfield of Reggie Bush and Ryan Mathews.
7. 0O0O0 (RICH B) CAN ONE MAN WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP? Let me put it this way, if Drew Brees can score 500 fantasy points per game, then Rich Burrier can beat anyone. Of course Brees won’t score 500 per game, so others will step up. In actuality, I’ve always believed you needed a three-headed monster to make a playoff run. This, Rich does have. On top of Brees, so far Frank Gore has shown no wear and tear and I can’t say for certain he will slow down at season’s end. On top of that Rob Gronkowski’s numbers should continue to improve. That’s three stars. Nice job. However, if you want to talk about an X-factor, how about Jeremy Maclin? We all already know Fitzgerald is going to struggled with no quarterback in Arizona, but Maclin has sort of been forgotten after a rough start to the season. Obviously it’s easy to blame Vick, but Maclin actually got hurt in week one and two weeks ago was suppose to be his first week healthy. What did he do? Six catches, 130 yards and a touchdown. Not bad.
8. GLORY HOLE DAYS (ROB M) CAN MASTERSON DO WHAT’S NEVER BEEN DONE? Only one team has started 1-5 and made the post-season, that was Rich Calderon. He actually started 1-6 and made it to the semis. However, Calderon did that during a 14-game season. He would end up losing two more during the regular season, but back then you could go 6-8. Now eight loses probably won’t do it (only one 5-8 team has crash the post-season party). Anyhow, why do I still believe in Masterson? He certainly has problems. Both Tony Romo and Julio Jones have been inconsistent at best (and that’s putting it nicely). He’s got good players at tight end (Cook) and at defense (Falcons DST), but neither is going to be cracking All-Robio rosters. The reason I do like him is at running back. Slowly but surely Chris Johnson and Doug Martin are waking up. Both are coming off their best performances of the year. Of course if these games are flukes, ball game. If they can rally, then Masterson has a favorable schedule down the stretch. He’s only a 15-point dog against Burrier this week and he’ll be the favorite over both Matt and Jeff down the stretch. This means he’ll have to find a way to go at least 2-1 against Eric, Molly and myself.
9. TONY STARK (DON) CAN DON FIND A WINNING LINEUP? It’s obvious Don has solid players. Richardson has been a huge plus and Colston is having his best season, however, the rest of his players have been maddening inconsistent. You just never really know what you’re going to get with Shonn Greene, Fred Jackson, Andre Johnson and any of the three quarterbacks on his roster. With Vick struggling, Don has gone drastic and is starting Brandon Weeden. This, I could never have predicted in the preseason. It’s hard to imagine this team winning it all if Don is forced to make 3-4 lineup decisions per week.
10. QUARTER POUNDERS (COLBY) HAVE I LOST FAITH IN COLBY’S TEAM? The easy answer is, yes. I just don’t see a championship quality roster. Tom Brady is not looking like an All-Robio player and I always thought he was the difference maker for Colby. I have zero faith in Ben Green-Ellis. Antonio Gates doesn’t scare me and I’m not sure the Ravens D should ever sniff his starting lineup. Now do I believe Colby won’t make the post-season? That, I won’t say. He’s still got Jamaal Charles and no team may be benefiting from other peoples’ injuries more. With Maurice Jones-Drew down, Rashard Jennings could fine RB2 and with Greg Jennings still out, Randall Cobb is looking like this seasons “Jordy Nelson.”
11. KOLB GOBBLERS (MATT) IS THERE A GOOD PLATER ON MATT’S ROSTER? Matt’s toast. The only reason why he’s not the worst team in the league is because he hasn’t had Jeff’s schedule and Jeff’s health issues. It really is getting ugly for Matt. He hasn’t broken 1,300 yet this season (the only team to not do that) and he’s only broken 1,200 twice. Head-to-head, he would lose to Jeff, 4-3. In fact, Matt has a losing record in the breakdown against everyone in the league and he’s a solid 2-40 against Griff, Eric, Molly, Calderon, Burrier and myself. Let me repeat that, 2-40 in breakdown against half the league. His starting roster is a who’s who of “who gives a fuck.” Stafford and the Patriots D are just 10th among quarterbacks/defenses and they’re Matt’s best players outside of Tony Gonzalez. Matt’s backs are 19th (Turner) and 24th (Leshoure), with only two 200-pt games between them. Receivers Mike Wallace (18th) and DeSean Jackson (25th) are no better.
12. SPIDE TWO WIDE BANANA (JEFF) HAS EVERYTHING GONE WRONG THAT CAN GONE WRONG? It sure seams like it. First, Jeff can’t keep anyone healthy. Ahmad Bradshaw has missed time. Aaron Hernandez has missed more time and now Jeff’s best player, Maurice Jones-Drew, is out for a while. Secondly, nobody has ever played a tougher schedule than Jeff. And when I say, nobody, I mean nobody in the history of this league. His opponents are averaging 1,518ppg, crushing the previous record. However, let’s go back to the draft, because that’s where Jeff’s biggest problems began. You see, Jeff waited on drafting a quarterback, planning on drafting RGIII, but then I snaked him in the sixth round. Now because of the health problems and the schedule, RGIII wouldn’t have saved Jeff’s season, but it certainly would have give Jeff something to look forward to next year.
