It’s time for the Robioland Keeper rankings. It was pretty predictable. I was wrong about only two. I thought Dave would keep Maroney and not Graham and I thought Don would keep Michael Turner and not Jennings. Anyhow, here are my rankings.
#1 Rob Masterson 5th Rd – Joseph Addai, RB (IND) 9th Rd – Braylon Edwards, WR (CLE) 11th Rd – Brandon Marshall, WR (DEN)
How’s this for keepers, a top-five RB and a top-five WR, and throw in a top-fifteen receiver just for fun. I still can’t figure out how Rob missed the playoffs last year. With the fourth pick in the draft, Rob’s got so much potential. If he misses the playoffs, he sucks complete ass and will be replaced in this league by Colby’s wife.
#2 Griff Coomer 2nd Rd – Reggie Wayne, WR (IND) 6th Rd – Ryan Grant, RB (GB) 13th Rd – Jason Witten, TE (DAL)
Grant is holding out for a lot of money. I know this because Jeff knows a chick who’s dad is the agent for Grant (and because it’s on Sportscenter), so he is quickly becoming a risk as a starter, but until I hear differently, Grant is the starting RB in Green Bay. Even without, Griff has a lock top-three WR in Wayne in the back end of the second and he’s got Witten for two more years. How did we all miss that pick? He could have kept TJ Housh in the third, but it was only the difference of three picks…so fuck it.
#3 Matt Neatock 2nd Rd – Adrian Peterson, RB (MIN) 7th Rd – Fred Taylor, RB (JAX) 13th Rd – Wes Welker, WR (NE)
Peterson. Peterson. Peterson. I still wish Chester Taylor would break his leg, but 1,500 yards is a lock (if healthy), 1,750 is possible and 2,000 yards…I’m not going to be the one to say it isn’t possible. Although we can’t forget , the last time AP played a full season, he was a freshman at OU. Anyhow, add in Welker, a high end #2 receiver (despite his whiteness) and suddenly we’re throwing the ‘Repeat’ word around. Of course, just ask the last seven league championships about how that went for them. The big draft question for Matt is, does he pencil in Taylor as a starter, allowing him to go after a big time QB and/or TE? We’ll see.
#4 Eric Vozzola 5th Rd – Tony Romo, QB (DAL) 6th Rd – Selvin Young, RB (DEN) 13th Rd – Kellen WInslow, TE (CLE)
There was really little doubt with Romo, although Fitzgerald in the third was an option. Tony Romo may not be able to win a playoff game, that don’t mean shit in fantasy. He’s the third best fantasy QB behind Brady and Manning. Winslow finally became a stud and a steal. Eric gets him for one more year. Young is the big question mark. Selvin is the starter in Denver and he’s predicting 2,000 yards, but when was the last time the pre-season starter in Denver ended up leading the team in yards? The question only Eric can answer is, does he trust him to be a starter for him?
#5 David Hightower 3rd Rd – Tom Brady, QB (NE) 6th Rd – Ernest Graham, RB (TB) 13th Rd – Owen Daniels (HOU)
Tom Brady alone nearly puts Dave at the top, but you have to expect a small drop off this season. He can’t throw for 50 touchdowns again, can he? Graham was a mild surprise. I had Dave down with Maroney two rounds later, but Graham is still a good keeper. The Caddy is still in the shop and he can keep Ernest for two more years, while this would have been his final year with Maroney. Daniels could be a great sleeper tight end, but I expect Dave to grab another one.
#6 Bob Castrone 2nd Rd – Peyton Manning, QB (IND) 10th Rd – Brandon Jacobs, RB (NYG) 15th Rd – JaMarcus Russeell, QB (OAK)
Smart of Bob to keep Manning over Andre Johnson one round later. Running backs are in a period of decline right now which means quarterbacks are just that much more important. Jacobs wasn’t the star he was suppose to be, so Bob gives the G-Man one more shot. He’s worth a starting spot on the Castrone’s. I’d like Russell better if Bob did the smart thing and made him a practice player last year, so he would have three more years of eligibility left instead of two.
#7 Don Vozzola 2nd Rd – Terrell Owens, WR (DAL) 9th Rd – Greg Jennings, WR (GB) None
Owens was a no-brainer, but Jennings was a surprise. I had Michael Turner penciled in as a starter for Don in ’08, but I was wrong. I’m a big fan of Aaron Rogers and I don’t expect any fall off from Jennings. You could argue Don’s got the best WR combo starting off the season.
#8 Richard Burrier None 9th Rd – Marion Barber, RB (DAL) 15th Rd – Philip Rivers, QB (SD)
Tomlinson is gone baby gone. It just seems weird. Barber is finally the starter in Big D, so can we expect Barber to move into the top five among backs? Felix Jones will steal some carries, but he won’t take away the goal line carries. Rivers isn’t bad, but he needs to step up to elite status. If not, Rich will regret trading away Brees for two straight years. He would have looked good for Burrier in the third round.
#9 Colby Hall 2nd Rd – Marshawn Lynch, RB (BUF) 8th Rd – Derek Anderson, QB (CLE) None
Based only on keepers, I have Jeff/Colby here, but if I could throw in their first round pick (LT), I’d move them much higher. I like Lynch a lot, easily should be a top-ten back, but time will tell if Anderson really belongs in the same breath as Brady, Manning, Romo, Palmer. He could have kept Jones-Drew and drafted Randy Moss, but I wouldn’t if I was him.
#10 Rich Calderon 3rd Rd – Drew Brees, QB (NO) 7th Rd – Dwayne Bowie, WR (KC) 12th Rd – Anthony Gonzalez, WR (IND)
Brees is a good start for any team and really the trade that save Calderon’s ’07 (and maybe ’08 too) and Bowie could be a top-ten receiver this season despite not having a QB, so there’s hope. Gonzalez will still be a third receiver, so he’s probably one more year away.
#11 Molly Coomer None 7th Rd – Marques Colston, WR (NO) 13th Rd – Dallas Clark – TE (IND)
Not her own fault for being this far back. She lost Gore thanks to the three-year rule and she had a shit load of talent in the second category, but Colston was clearly the best one. The keeping of Clark means every offensive skilled position for the Colts is kept.
#12 Robio Murray 1st Rd – Brian Westbrook, RB (PHI) 8th Rd – Bernard Berrian, WR (MIN) 12th Rd – Cowboys, DST (DAL)
You know life sucks when I have to keep a fucking Eagle. Last year I ranked my keepers number one…man, how the mightly have fallen. Dear God, let’s hope Berrian becomes a Pro Bowler.
