CBS Sportsline recently did a mock draft. So I wanted to see where some of those players are going to end up in our league. At this point I’m just assuming who’s keeping who and who someone might take.
ROUND ONE
#1 David Hightower Shaun Alexander (RB SEA) Griff’s got to keep Larry Johnson, so Alexander should be free. Add in Maroney, who takes over in New England and Dave suddenly has a great combo…oh, assuming Alexander’s foot problems don’t continue. #2 Eric Vozzola Joseph Addai (RB IND) This could also end up being either Alexander or Steven Jackson…everything depends on Masterson’s decision. All three would be a solid combo with Lil’ Ronnie. #3 Matt Neatock Brian Westbrook (RB PHI) Westbrook landing on the Franchise would be more exciting to Matt than marrying a deaf girl. Not that he can’t do both of course. #4 Rich Calderon Rudi Johnson (RB CIN) For a guy who lacked star power in ’06, Rudi has to be a little bit of a let down. Calderon has been known to be shifty up here, so I could see him going with a younger back like Bush or Lynch. With Johnson though, you know what you’re getting. 80-100 and a touchdown…minimum. #5 Griff Coomer Clinton Portis (RB WAS) This is early for a guy coming off a season-ending injury in ’06. But don’t be fooled, this wasn’t an ACL injury. If Portis is healthy and he’s given 20 touches a game, he’s a top ten back for sure. With Larry hanging in the 5th for Griff, he just needs Portis to be consistent. #6 Jeff & Colby Reggie Bush (RB NO) It’s time to forget that these boys could have had Jacobs and Benson, it’s time to move forward and why not start with Reggie. Yeah, he’s still splitting time, but his numbers were decent last year and they should improve. If Bob decided to keep Bush, then Benson could be available here. #7 Rich Burrier LaDainian Tomlinson (RB SD) It’s sad to think, this could be the final year of Burrier & Tomlinson. With no championships the past three years, could Rich trade LT? Maybe. Let’s assume he doesn’t and he keeps him here. #8 Molly Coomer Marshawn Lynch (RB BUF) He’s unknown from playing in the Pac-10, but he’s good and he won’t be sharing carries. If he has a good to great preseason, he might not even last to here. Whoever does land him though should make sure they have some backup while he gets his legs under him. He still is a rookie. #9 Rob Masterson Steven Jackson (RB STL) Rob probably has the toughest keeper decision, but it’s one a lot of people would want. If he keeps Jackson, then Rob’s 2nd round pick will be either Jamal Lewis, Jacobs or McAllister. If Rob keeps Addai in the fifth, then he’ll get whatever running back above that falls to him (we have to assume Jackson goes either one or two). I think we might have our first poll question of the year. #10 Bob Castrone Tory Holt (WR STL) Bob also has to make a tough decision. This pick could easily be Reggie Bush. However, until he tells me so, I’m going with Benson and Jones. Both could be good, not great this year, so Bob could easily go running back here, but it would be tough to pass up an elite receiver now. #11 Robio Murray Chad Johnson (WR CIN) I got Parker in round two and Travis Henry in the 6th (Some have him going in the 1st in some mock drafts). I have faith in them, so I’m rollin with a wideout here. With Palmer a year removed from his knee injury, all Bengals’ numbers should improve. #12 Don Vozzola Edgerrin James (RB ARI) Could Gator Nation end up with an alll-Hurricane backfield? James is a tough call. The desert was unkind in the Edge last year, but he’s got a new coach and his QB should be able to step up this year. James is a good sleeper pick for 1,300 yards, but if he has a slow preseason, he could fall way back.
ROUND TWO
#13 Don Vozzola Reggie Wayne (WR IND) With his backfield filled up, Don needs a wideout and lord almighty, it’s another Hurricane. Actually, Don’s got lots of choices, Smith, Fitz or Harrison to name a few, but still, wouldn’t this be great? #14 Robio Murray Willie Parker (RB PIT) He’s got a new coach, but he’s still the man in Pittsburgh. However, he needs to start producing on the road like he does at home. He needs to also hold on to those goal line carries. #15 Bob Castrone Steve Smith (WR CAR) Two years ago he was the best, but injuries have hurt him. This year he has to deal with a shaky QB situation and a rookie wide out lined up on the other side. #16 Rob Masterson Jamal Lewis (RB CLE) It seems like Lewis is 40 years old, but in reality, he’s 28, the prime for a running back. He’s been a joke the past two years, but he’s in a new home with a rebuilt offensive line. Teams may stack the line against him, but he’s going to get a butt load of carries (With a good preseason, he could sneak into the first). #17 Molly Coomer Peyton Manning (QB IND)With two backs (Gore & Lynch) and a solid wideout (Colston in the 7th), Molly has lots of options…the top tight end? another great receiver (Fitzgerald or Harrison) or the top QB? It all depends on what she thinks she has with Colston. If she thinks she’s got a top-ten pair of hands, then why not grab Manning? #18 Rich Burrier Larry Fitzgerald (WR ARI) For now I’m still thinking Barber III is a good keeper for Rich, someone he can rely on to stat, so look for the Bruisers to grab a stud receiver. If Barber doesn’t look like he’s working out, Rich can choose between running backs Jacobs, McAllister. #19 Jeff & Colby Brandon Jacobs (RB NYG) Again without knowing what Bob will do, it’s hard to figure this stuff out, but if Jacobs is available, then he’s going to the homer. If he can establish himself though and prove to owners that Droughns won’t steal a bunch of carries, Jacobs could be looking like a first rounder. #20 Griff Coomer Marvin Harrison (WR IND) Like his wife, Coomer has his two running backs in the bag (Johnson, Portis). He should be satisfied at QB with Schaub, so Griff will snag the next best receiver. Harrison may only be second best on his team, but he’s still top ten. #21 Rich Calderon Cadillac Williams (RB TB) Calderon can actually choose between Williams or Tory Holt here. Either way, I still think he’s going to grab a running back in the first. If you do think he’ll keep Holt, then move every receiver up one spot and Caddy would go in the late first round. Now that I think about it, I could see him doing that. #22 Matt Neatock Deuce McAllister (RB NO) Matt nailed an elite running back in Westbrook in the first, now all he needs is consistency. Cue in the Deuce. He’ll give you Rudi Johnson type numbers, without costing you a first round pick. #23 Eric Vozzola Ronnie Brown (RB MIA) Despite his struggles last year, Eric’s has to keep him here in the late second round. He doesn’t need him to be a star, just a good, solid runner (and for Ricky to keep failing his drug tests). #24 David Hightower Tom Brady (QB NE) People always said, imagine what Brady would do if he had good receivers, well we’ll soon find out. I wouldn’t be shocked if he went ahead of Manning early in the early second round.
ROUND THREE
#25 David Hightower Roy Williams (WR DET) Roy’s gotten better every year and with Calvin Johnson on the other side, he should have more room to roam. #26 Eric Vozzola Plaxico Burress (WR NYG) Plaxico came to camp. He actually came to mini-camp. In the end, all that matters is how much better Lil’ Manning gets. #27 Matt Neatock Randy Moss (WR NE) He’s always a risk and he’s not young anymore, but he’s in the best possible situation. There is no excuse for him to not return to his old form. #28 Rich Calderon Terrell Owens (WR DAL) A healthy finger, a new coach, a new offensive coordination, a QB entering his second year as a starter…the stars are all lining up for Owens, up until he goes crazy in week four. #29 Griff Coomer Anquan Boldin (WR ARI) He tends to be forgotten because Fitzgerald is the bigger name, but Boldin did have more catches and yards last season and I expect a Seminole fan (loser!) to know that. #30 Jeff & Colby Hines Ward (WR PIT) His numbers fell off (slightly) last year, but he struggled with his health, as did his quarterback. Big Ben is back and so should Ward’s numbers. #31 Rich Burrier Carson Palmer (QB CIN) He’s a year removed from the ACL tear and he’s in his prime. He’s an elite QB who could easily be the best arm out there. #32 Molly Coomer Javon Walker (WR DEN) He got a 1,000 yards last season despite all quarterback issues in Denver. This year they got a new running back and Cutler is in his second year. Walker could easily be a top-ten receiver. #33 Rob Masterson Darrell Jackson (WR SF) He’s outta Seattle, but in SF he’ll be Alex Smith’s favorite target. If he stays healthy, he’ll bring in 75 catches and 1,100 yards in good 49ers offense. #34 Bob Castrone Andrea Johnson (WR HOU) He’s got a new QB, but Johnson is still the best hands on the team. It might take a few games, but Andrea and Schaub should contact. #35 Robio Murray TJ Houshmandzadeh (WR CIN) He’s not the number one guy in Cincy, but like the Colts, the Bengals have two receivers worth taking. #36 Don Vozzola Donald Driver (WR GB) In between Brett Farves bitching and 47 INT’s, he does complete a pass every now and then and when he does, it more often than not is to Driver.
ROUND FOUR
#37 Don Vozzola Drew Bress (QB NO) He’s got his backs, he’s got his receivers, now it’s time to grab the last great QB. There’s no reason to believe Brees would continue what he did in 2006. #38 Robio Murray Bears Defense (DST CHI) I can grab the best tight end in the league here, but I know how important defense is. The Bears DST are still the cream of the crop and they’ll look fine on my roster. #39 Bob Castrone Cedric Benson (RB CHI) Word on the street is Hester will be taking up some space in the Bears’ backfield. However, take it from a Hurricane fan, he’s no Reggie Bush. Thomas Jones is gone…it’s time for Benson to shine. #40 Rob Masterson Calvin Johnson (WR MIN) He’s a super stud and a pot smoker, so Rob should love him. I know you’re not supposed to rely on rookie receivers as starters, but this guy has all the tools to produce this year. #41 Molly Coomer Antonio Gates (TE SD) Molly knows the importance of a tight end and it will be tough to pass up on the league’s best. She needs another receiver, but look below…anyone knocking you out? If Calvin Johnson falls to her, he could be a good grab as well. #42 Rich Burrier Andrian Peterson (RB MIN) This guy should not have been drafted by Minnesota. He should be starting somewhere. And don’t buy into this injury prone crap. He got hurt last year and tried to comeback to soon. Before that, he was fine. Rich needs protection if Barber III doesn’t workout, so why not a rookie who could be ready to shine by mid-season? #43 Jeff & Colby Lee Evans (WR BUF) He’s not flashy and he tends to be forgotten, but he was one of the league’s best receivers last season. It’s time to start considering him a No. 1 fantasy receiver. #44 Griff Coomer Tony Gonzalez (TE KC) Gates will probably be gone before Griff picks here in the fourth, so look for him to grab the second best. Gonzalez struggled a bit in ’06, but the QB situation will be better this year in KC. Griff could also nail down a great defense, holding off on a TE until the fifth round. #45 Rich Calderon Vincent Jackson (WR SD) Who? Exactly. Rich loves nap time and he loves to show us all up and grab the next great keeper. Jackson is a popular sleeper pick and could be Rivers favorite target after Gates in ’07. #46 Matt Neatock Laveranues Coles (WR NYJ) He’s not flashy, he doesn’t impress, but he did catch 90 balls last season for a 1,000 yards. #47 Eric Vozzola Deion Branch (WR SEA) With Jackson gone, Branch is the undisputed man in Seattle. With a healthy Hasselback (and maybe Alexander), Deion’s numbers should improve. #48 David Hightower Donte Stallworth (WR NE) He’s kind of a dark horse. He was injured a lot last year, so he only caught 38 balls (don’t forget he was late joining the Eagles). However, he did average over 19 yards per catch. Now imagine what he can do with Tom Brady throwing his way.
ROUND FIVE #49 David Hightower Jeremy Shockey (TE NYG) To nearly round out the starting lineup, Dave grabs a stud tight end. Shockey finally looked like, well…Shockey last season. If he could stop dropping just a handful of balls, he would be better than Gonzalez. #50 Eric Vozzola Tony Romo (QB DAL) He’s got two solid receivers, two good back and a great tight end. Unless he has flashbacks from last year’s playoff game, he should be okay. #51 Matt Neatock Todd Heap (TE BAL) I always thought this guy was over hyped, but he finally paid off last season, thanks to McNair. There’s no reason why can’t do it again. #52 Rich Calderon Chris Henry (RB TEN) The youth moment continues for the Projects. Although I never even heard of this guy in college, the Titans are swearing by him. What happened to LeDale White…oh yeah, he’s fat. #53 Griff Coomer Larry Johnson (RB KC) Uh yeah…Still one of the best sleeper picks in league history. #54 Jeff & Colby Donovan McNabb (QB PHI) You might as well keep him. If not, he’ll probably be drafted around this time. He can’t stay healthy, but again, he has something to prove. #55 Rich Burrier Reggie Brown (WR PHI) He’s kind of a reach here, but I don’t see a lot of better options here at wideout. With Stallworth gone, Brown has the best shot of being a 1,000 yard receiver in Philly. I could also see Matt being a homer and snagging Reggie four spots up. #56 Molly Coomer Frank Gore (RB SF) After sitting on Molly’s bench all of 2005, Gore was a huge hit in 2006. Let’s see what he can do now that he’s the man on the Pop. #57 Rob Masterson Marc Bulger (QB STL) Rob could go TE, but he’s never been one to waste a top pick on one. Bulger is still a top QB (just ask the defending champ Don) and he should be a nice fit. My only question is, if Rob does keep Jackson, would he really want both the QB and RB from the Rams? If not, then look for Hasselback. #58 Bob Castrone Matt Hasselback (QB SEA) It could go either way, Hasselback or Bulger. After these two, the ‘sure thing’ QB’s are off the table in my book. #59 Robio Murray Vernon Davis (TE SF) He’s a potential superstar, but you can’t ignore the ‘potential’ part. Happy with my team so far, I can take a chance on ‘potential’. I could also be a homer here and grab Jason Witten. #60 Don Vozzola Willie McGahee (RB BAL) In his final year on the Gator Nation, it’s time for McGahee to finally step up to elite status. Don needs a star here and with Willis on the Ravens, he might just finally get one.
MOCK TEAM (INCLUDING ALL KEEPERS)
David Hightower (QB) Tom Brady, (RB) Shaun Alexander, (RB) L, Maroney, (WR) Roy Williams, (WR) Donte Stallworth, (TE) Jeremy Shockey From 1-12 to this? The names are big, but there are a still a couple of question marks? Is Maroney for real? Will Alexander’s knee hold up? Dave might want to try to find a third running back somewhere in there.
Eric Vozzola (QB) Tony Romo, (RB) Joseph Addai, (RB) Ronnie Brown, (RB) Ahman Green (WR) Plaxico Burress, (WR) Deion Branch, (TE) Kellen Winslow Either Brown or Addai will need to step up to ‘elite’ status (1,300 yards and 10 touchdowns). Eric will have his choice at QB between Bulger, Romo or Hasselback. Winslow is a solid steal in category three.
Matt Neatock (RB) Brian Westbrook, (RB) Deuce McAllister, (RB) M. Jones-Drew (WR) Randy Moss, (WR) L. Coles, (TE) A. Crumpler Not bad, but could be stronger. It would help Matt out a lot if either McAllister or Jones-Drew wasn’t sharing their respected backfields. Just ask Calderon how that worked out for him last season.
Rich Calderon (QB) Philip Rivers, (RB) R. Johnson (RB) C. Williams, (RB) C. Taylor, (RB) C. Henry (WR) Terrell Owens, (WR) Vincent Jackson A tough first mock draft. One too many sleepers and no superstar in the backfield. Time will tell if Rivers is ready to start in Robioland.
Griff Coomer (QB) Matt Schaub, (RB) Larry Johnson, (RB) Clinton Portis (WR) Anquan Boldin, (WR) Marvin Harrison, (TE) Tony Gonzalez It all depends on Portis…if he is the 2005 Portis, then Griff will be an elite team again. If he struggles, Griff should make sure he finds either another solid wideout or a sleeper running back in the mid-to-late rounds.
Jeff and Colby (QB) Donovan McNabb, (RB) Reggie Bush, (RB) Brandon Jacobs (WR) Hines Ward, (WR) Lee Evans, (DST) Jaquars Defense No sure thing at the running back spot. Neither Bush or Jacobs has ever started a game. Evans is a find if he really does last to the 4th round. We’ll see if McNabb is the right choice in the fifth.
Richard Burrier (QB) Carson Palmer, (QB) Matt. Leinart, (RB) L. Tomlinson, (RB) M. Barber III, (RB) A. Peterson (WR) Larry Fitzgerald, (WR) Reggie Brown Palmer may not happen if Burrier believes in Leinart. If he does, he can find a better second receiver. Everything depends on Barber III. If he can wrestle the starting spot from Julius Jones, then Rich is golden.
Molly Coomer (QB) Peyton Manning, (RB) Frank Gore, (RB) Marshawn Lynch (WR) Javon Walker, (WR) Marques Colston, (TE) Antonio Gates Solid start, solid team, no matter which running back falls to Molly in the first round. If she can find a top-five defense somewhere between 6-8, she’s going to be tough to beat.
Rob Masterson (QB) Marc Bulger, (RB) Steven Jackson, (RB) Jamal Lewis (WR) Darrell Jackson, (WR) Calvin Johnson, (WR) Braylon Edwards (DST) Ravens Defense You can wipe this team away if Rob decides to go with Addai. I’m not sure if Calvin is really the answer as the No. 2 receiver, but rushing points won’t be an issue here.
Bob Castrone (QB) Matt Hasselback, (QB) Big Ben, (RB) Cedric Benson, (RB) Thomas Jones (WR) Tory Holt, (WR) Steve Smith, (WR) Andrea Johnson If Bob could really land this receiving crew, he would probably have one of the best, if not the best, receiving triplets in league history. Add in a couple of workhorse backs and winning shouldn’t be a problem for Bob.
Robio Murray (QB) Vince Young, (RB) Willie Parker, (RB) Travis Henry (WR) Chad Johnson, (WR) TJ Houshmandzadeh, (TE) Vernon Davis, (DST) Bears Defense There are question marks, will Vince take a step forward, will Henry really thrive in Denver? If both these players perform at the level I’m hoping, I should have my best team since 2004.
Don Vozzola (QB) Drew Brees, (RB) Willis McGahee, (RB) Edgerrin James (WR) Reggie Wayne, (WR) Donald Driver The Defending champs would have to consider changing their names to Hurricane Nation. Don would have a solid, if not glamorous team here. If James can be half of what he was in Indy, then Don should be back in the playoffs.
